There are different types of information sources:

  • Reference sources
These are, for example, library catalogues, e-source databases or a website
  • Factual sources
These contain data that you can use immediately: telephone numbers, statistical data, etc.
  • Full-text sources
For example books or research databases with articles (such as ScienceDirect)

The information provided by these sources is saved in different ways: on paper or digitally.

The method used to gather and store the information will influence greatly the extent in which the source is up-to-date. In addition, there are more features that may play a role when selecting a source. Your search question will determine which type of information source will be the most suitable to use.

The choice of information source will also depend on the research stage you are currently at. You will, therefore, use other sources during the initial stage than when further along in the research process
